Getting oriented on the UHCL campus

UHCL’s main campus is organized around two areas, North Campus and South Campus, with numbered buildings, entrances and parking paystations shown on the campus map. Its main buildings include the Arbor, Bayou, Delta, STEM and Classroom, and Student Services and Classroom buildings.

The Bayou Building brings together classrooms, administrative and faculty offices, the library, Campus Store, Patio Cafe, IT Support Center, copy services and Bayou Theater. The theater has 500 seats and presents campus and community events, including performances, films and seminars throughout the year.

The Arbor Building has painting, ceramics, weaving and photography studios, as well as educational centers and teaching-methods labs. Knowing which building you need can help you read the map and plan your route across campus.

The campus has a history shaped by its location in Clear Lake. The 62nd Texas Legislature authorized a second University of Houston campus in 1971. The Texas Senate authorized construction of a permanent Clear Lake campus in 1973, and construction on the Bayou Building began in 1974.

The UHCL maps page links to the current campus map PDF and identifies visitor parking as Lot R, close to University Drive and Bayou Drive. The map labels buildings 1–13, entrances 1–3, North Campus and South Campus, visitor Lot R and several parking paystations.

Free parking is not available on campus, and vehicles must display a valid parking permit. If you arrive without a permit, use designated paid visitor parking. Temporary permits are available through AMP (AIMS Mobile Pay) or at campus parking kiosks, which accept debit and credit cards. Parking regulations are enforced around the clock, including holidays.

If you have a parking question while on campus, the Parking and Transportation Information Window is in Bayou Building room 1636. Its office hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Campus tours and admissions visits

Campus tours and admissions visits

UHCL offers individual prospective-student tours on weekdays and a recurring Saturday option; group tours require advance arrangements. Choose a format that fits your party, then confirm the details with the university before you travel.

Individual tours

Weekday individual tours start at 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. and last about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Saturday tours run from 10 a.m. to noon every second Saturday; most campus offices are closed during these tours.

Group tours

Group tours are scheduled Monday–Friday at 10 a.m. They require at least 10 students, accommodate up to 50 people and need at least two weeks’ advance notice. The university requires one chaperone per 10 students.

A group request is not confirmed until the Campus Visit Team emails confirmation of the date and time. Group tours are unavailable during the first week and finals week of each fall and spring semester, and they exclude holidays and university closures.

If a tour visitor needs disability accommodations or other special arrangements, UHCL asks them to email CampusVisitRSVP@uhcl.edu at least one week before the tour.

For any scheduled tour, arrive 10–15 minutes early if you’re driving. Admissions hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.; virtual and in-person appointments are available until 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.
